ETNA - TAORMINA

DEPARTURES FROM
Reggio Calabria (7.45 a.m.) and Villa San Giovanni (8.15 a.m.)
with return at 7.20/19.40 p.m.

Meeting point in Reggio Calabria or Villa San Giovanni. Accommodation in private car/minibus and embarkation on scheduled ship for evocative crossing of the Strait of Messina. Disembark in Messina and continue on to Mount Etna. Rifugio Sapienza, where we will arrive, is located at an altitude of 1910 metres on Etna's southern slope. Although it has been threatened and damaged several times by lava flows, which have often brushed against it, the refuge has stood the test of time since its construction in 1936, when it took the place of an old Casa Cantoniera used as a refuge since the end of the 19th century.
There are several bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and it is the most important meeting point on Etna. Free time about 3 hours. Walk (approx. 200 m) for a free visit to the Silvestri Craters (Lower and Upper). It is possible to visit both. The Inferior one is very easy to visit and in about 5 minutes you are on the crater rim. While for the Upper one, you have to climb about 30 minutes on foot. Possibility of taking the cable car and ascending to an altitude of 2,500 metres (optional at extra charge). Free lunch. 14:00 appointment and departure for Taormina. Arrival and free time of approximately h. 2:30. A walk along the famous Corso Umberto or a visit to the Ancient Theatre, Palazzo Corvaja, Piazza IX Aprile with the Baroque Church of San Giuseppe and the Clock Tower, the Cathedral of San Nicolò. Return and continuation to the places of departure in the morning.
